Conflict & Post-Conflict

Conflict / Post-conflict / Failed states

With the eyes of the world directed at Iraq and Afghanistan many have forgotten the low intensity conflicts simmering in lesser known places. Somalia, Congo, Sri Lanka, Haiti and Nigeria are some of the countries Juliana keeps returning to, not just to chart the lives that are lost but also with view to exploring the economic, political and social forces which drive these conflicts in the first place.

In 2001 she worked with Elizabeth Jones to expose the coltan trade at the heart of the conflict in Congo and was nominated for the One World Award. In 2006 her film about Liberia’s child combatants launched Al Jazeera’s programming output the day the channel went on air.

Juliana continues to work in the oil-rich Niger Delta not just to explore the roots of the insurgency but also to look at the prospects for the demobilized militants. She’s investigated extortion and illegal fund-raising for the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, the power of fundamentalist Buddhism, as well as war crimes committed during the final month of the conflict in May 2010.

Over time her interest has shifted towards working in post-conflict areas to explore how reconciliation can take place.
