Multinational Corporations

The past decade has given rise to a new phenomenon: an increasing number of lawsuits against multinational companies around the world brought by human rights lawyers and the victims they represent.  War crimes, conspiracy, corruption and payments to terrorists are just some of the serious charges brought by plaintiffs who are sometimes barely literate and who are asking why their interests should be sacrifices in the name of corporate profits.

Juliana first covered one of these cases in Liberia in 2006 where she investigated accusations against Firestone Natural Rubber where workers claimed the company used child and slave labor in its plantations. Shortly later a lawsuit brought in Indonesia against Exxon Mobil hit the news when villagers in the civil war torn province of Aceh claimed the multinational paid the Indonesian army knowing the forces committed human rights violations.

In 2008 yet more cases were making headlines and Juliana began filming for the ‘Corporations on Trial’ series which was among the first to investigate this new legal phenomenon – asking how the world’s multinationals can be kept in check.
