Investigations
Just like her coverage of conflicts Juliana’s investigations have taken her off the beaten track. In 2006 her interest was stoked in Kyrgyzstan when she read that three heads of the Olympic committee were murdered and led to an exposure of mafia involvement in the sporting world which went all the way to the top of politics.
Shortly later and posing as a tourist Juliana gained rare access to Turkmenistan and explored the cult of its secretive leader Turkmenbashi and in Aceh she followed the trail of embezzled Tsunami relief funds.
In 2009 she went to Papua New Guinea to shed light on a scandal involving faked carbon offset certificates which pitched a controversial carbon trader against the powerful and corrupt logging industry.
More recently Juliana undertook an investigation into illegal fishing in Sierra Leone which led to the arrest and fin of two South Korean trawlers. In the same year she returned to Nigeria for a special two-part investigation into the trafficking of women into the sex trade which became a finalist in the Ilaria Alpi Awards 2012.
Staying with the theme of corruption and conflict around natural resources Juliana returned to the Niger Delta to investigate the causes of environmental pollution and oil bunkering.
